When the gun fires in Heckscher State Park in East Islip to kick off the first-ever Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon on Sept. 13, the runners will be wending their way toward Patchogue.
And in the months before the race, people will be watching, again and again, as a scripted version of the scene on Main Street here plays out on their televisions.
Cablevision techs and Suffolk County officials were downtown last month to film a TV commercial for the upcoming event. A portion of Main Street in Patchogue was shut down about 40 minutes for the shoot, during which a lone runner was filmed coming around the corner from North Ocean Avenue onto East Main Street.
Registration for the race was announced in January, with Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone saying all the proceeds will go toward enhancing services for veterans in Suffolk County.
“We want to do something specifically for local veterans, and we know that every dollar that we are able to donate and raise from the marathon will be going right back to the veterans in our community right here in Suffolk County,” Bellone said. “I encourage all residents to get involved in the marathon.”
By May, Bellone’s office announced more than 1,600 runners had signed up for the race.
The full marathon runners will actually make a U-turn in Patchogue, and make their way back to Heckscher. It costs between $40 and $90 to race. Register by clicking here.
The Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier.
