What’s in season at Deer Run? Pretty much everything

Summer on Long Island has come to mean farmers’ markets aplenty, where Stop and Shop escapees can choose from a variety of foodstuffs that range from locally grown produce, to jellies and jams, to pickles and even baked goods and hot sauces.

These efforts will culminate Friday with the 5th Annual Grown on Long Island Day at the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank. (Click the link for additional details.) In the run-up to the big event, we visited our local grower, the family-run Deer Run Farms in Brookhaven Hamlet to see what’s in season.

In short, just about everything, said Valerie Nolan, whose family has owned Deer Run for over 100 years.

“All of the green leaf vegetables we grow here,” she said, pointing to the lettuce, cabbage, kale, basil and other herbs. “Most everything is local right now.”

Though brussels sprouts, cauliflower and apples come a bit later, Nolan said mid-summer here is the best time to create a seasonal dish at home from the maximum amount of locally grown products.

“The summer is definitely the time,” she said.

Deer Run also offers a range of fruits and vegetables that all come from East End farms, such as peaches, cantaloupe and red seedless watermelons that just came into season, as well corn, beets, carrots, broccoli, peppers tomatoes, eggplants and cucumbers. (And more, of course.)

The stand at 282 South Country Road is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week during the peak summer months, and stays open until 7 p.m. on Fridays.

The stand keeps weekend hours after Labor Day until October.
