Downtown Patchogue has got its neighborhood liquor store back.

The inventory is growing by the day, and shoppers will find wine and spirits prices at the new Quench Liquors match those of what you might find at much larger shops.

This is all thanks to Maria Connolly of Shoreham, who purchased the old Quench Liquors at 90 West Main Street, across from The Cuban, this winter.

Quench was closed for about three weeks this winter during the transition to the new ownership. They reopened in mid-March.

The reaction from customers is often the same.

In short, they’re pumped.

One customer the other day clapped his hands upon entering the remodeled store.

“See!” Connolly told us. “This is always the reaction we get.”

“The first day we opened the shelves were empty because the old place had such little inventory,” she said. “We changed the layout and stocked up. It looks completely different from the old layout. We moved the counter. Changed the floors and brightened it up.”

They’re also now offering delivery seven days as week for locals.

Connolly, a native of Honduras, also enjoys interacting with customers in both English and Spanish, making wine recommendations and pointing people to Quench’s small-batch options for spirits.

“We have brands that everybody knows but other things that are less well-known that we have tasted and have liked, small batch stuff you won’t find in every liquor store,” she said.

And she knows her stuff. She worked in liquor stores while commuting to Hofstra, and never left the industry. Her husband’s family has been in the liquor business since the 1970s, she said.

“This has been so exciting,” she tells us. “For everyone.”

“We already have regulars we know by name. And they know my name.”
