Two abandoned and boarded-up buildings on Montauk Highway in Bellport were torn down last week in an effort to redevelop and beautify the area.

The structures, located at 1465 Montauk Highway, had deteriorated after years of neglect by the owner, which resulted in several resident complaints and code violations, a spokesperson from the town said.

The demolition is in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code, which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of structures deemed unsafe.

Councilman Michael Loguercio said he and the town’s law department will continue to identify and demolish buildings to improve life for those who live in the area.

“We are keeping our promise to redevelop the Montauk Highway corridor in North Bellport by removing these two eyesores and making room for businesses that will benefit the community,” he said.
