Food pantries across Long Island have been facing unusual and unexpected circumstances during this COVID-19 pandemic.
For one, places like Costco have been limiting purchases of any single item, so donated money can only go so far.
And a single family can’t really use a 4 and 1/2-pound tuna can from Restaurant Depot.
Recognizing this need, the Greater Patchogue Community Organization Active in Disaster, or COAD — which was formed after Hurricane Sandy — is helping coordinate food collection efforts in the area.
This Friday, May 29, will mark the first COAD Food Drive Fridays, it was announced today. Their are multiple locations at which people can drop off non-perishables (full list below).
Marian Russo, who leads the COAD and is the executive director of the Village of Patchogue Community Development Agency, explained that this is the first time the volunteer organization has been activated, and in this situation they immediately knew food would be an issue for many families.
The drives will take place every Friday starting May 29, between noon and 3 p.m., at each location.
Some of the items that are most in need, according to the group, are pasta, jarred sauce, canned tuna and chicken, mayonnaise, canned soup and chili, meal replacement bars, peanut butter, jelly, loaves of bread, oatmeal, bags of dry beans, rice cakes, wraps and tortillas, bottled water, juice, granola bars, and children’s snack items.
Cleaning supplies, paper towels, napkins, toilet paper, diapers, and formula are in need as well. Gift cards to local grocery stores will be “gratefully accepted,” the announcement reads.
The below locations are currently donation sites, but this is an evolving collaborative effort.
