Veteran Broadway and film actress Brandi Brukhardt — known for her starring role as Sophie in the Broadway hit Mamma Mia — is taking the stage in Bellport this summer.
Brukhardt will be making her Gateway debut in the lead role of Maria Rainer in The Sound of Music, which will be running from July 31 through Aug. 17.
This all comes 61 years after The Sound of Music first lit up Broadway in 1958, winning five Tony Awards including awards for Best Musical and Best Actress in a Musical. The 1965 film version garnered several Academy Awards and Golden Globes.
Now the show’s being taken to within the intimate Gateway playhouse on South Country Road, with a musical score that includes “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss,” and the title song, “The Sound of Music.”
The musical tells the story of troubled nun sent to care for 7 well off children in a strict home run by a former sea-captain. She changes their lives forever through song and heart.

Hamilton is best known for her association with Michael Bennett’s legendary A Chorus Line, which she has directed previously at The Gateway. She’s directed and choreographed over 50 productions of A Chorus Line in Europe, the U.S., and Asia.
Hosun Moon will musically direct. Ms Moon has worked as a music director for numerous musicals at Gateway, according to the playhouse.
Her chamber music performances with numerous ensembles have been heard in such places as Carnegie Hall, Columbia University, Union Square Park, Bryant Park, SUNY at Stony Brook, and various churches in New York area.
