The new Great South Bar will be opening its door Friday to thirsty patrons in downtown Patchogue.

The throwback bar was built within the former Bella Vino location at 23 South Ocean Avenue. Bella Vino, a wine bar, had operated there for well over a decade.

The partners in Great South Bar — Terence Daly, James McPeak and David Prunier — started work July 1.

They hosted a soft opening for friends and family Wednesday night.

The partners, all in their 30s, agreed they wanted to build a spot where they themselves would like to hang in the village — an alternative to the current nightlife.

“A classic American bar,” Daly previously told GreaterPatchogue. “No twist. Just quality drinks for thirsty people … Booze for money.”

Great South Bar will also be offering a menu that includes sandwiches, salads, meats and cheeses, crudité and other finger foods, with the meats sourced locally.

The bar opens for the first time to the public on Friday, Sept. 21, at 5 p.m. until 2 a.m.

For the first few weeks, Great South Bar will only be open starting at 5 p.m. weeknights and Saturdays, but 12:30 p.m. Sundays for football. The more permanent hours, once in place, will see the bar open at 11:30 a.m.
