Finest Fitness is the place to be this Saturday night if you’re looking to take in a fight right here in Patchogue, L.I.
The multi-level East Main Street gym is hosting a night filled with fights, including the Metropolitan Qualifier for the Road to Madison Square Garden boxing tournament.
The event, which is run by U.S.A. Boxing Metro and sponsored by Madison Square Garden, is a competition to find the best amateur boxers nationally.
The winners of the bouts in Patchogue will move on to face-off in the world’s most famous arena later this month.
“But my show is a little bit more special [than just the Road to MSG],” said Finest Fitness boxing coach Mike Vargas.
In addition to the qualifier to fight at MSG, Finest Fitness is holding matches for the Junior Olympics, as well as a New York tournament called Master Bouts, which is for boxers 36 years and older.
“We are going to have between 22 and 24 bouts,” said Vargas. “It’s a lot.”
Finest Fitness was the only venue in Suffolk County chosen to hold a Road to MSG show this year. And it wasn’t at random, either.
It was all made possible after Vargas organized his first-ever event at Finest Fitness Dec. 16.

The big blows between opponents weren’t the only hit at Finest Fitness in December.
“We had 13 great bouts that night, with over 200 people in attendance,” he said.
Now, Vargas is hoping to see those attendance numbers carry-over to his second and biggest event.
The doors will be opening at 5 p.m., with bouts starting at 6 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door for $25 for adults, children 11-17 are $15, and 10 and under are $10. Finest Fitness is located at 208 East Main Street.
Food and beverages will also be sold at the event.
